Default shifting problems

i have an 86 with l98 and 700r4 .. i have been having trouble with it shifting out of first ... i changed filter and fluid and it worked once then when i put in reverse and tried to leave again it stayed in first... if you left off the throttle it coast and won't engage until you come back to the rpms you let off at or until car slows down enough to match rpms

could be the valve body sticking..start down the road and when it doesn't shift hit the gas pedal quickly and repeatedly..if the valve body is stuck it should make it shift when you do this

good luck

ok after doing some pressure test we have determined the valve body has to be sticking somewhere .. does any have a good exploded view of the valve body?

You should get a factory service manual. Check ebay or the classifieds here. It'll have complete overhaul procedures and just about any diagram you can dream of. The manual for my 92 has VERY good diagrams of the valve body of the 700R4, detailing where fluid should and shouldn't be and what should and shouldn't be open under different parameters.
