I have a 92 C4 w/intermittent starting. I have installed the VATS bypass & still have the issue. When I turn it over there is NO noise/sound whatsoever. The dash light, power antenna, & radio all work. It starts after waiting approx. 3-5 minutes sometimes longer. If I remember right it seems to be on a cold start more than on a hot start. Where should I start?
If you don't hear the starter solenoid click, that's where I'd concentrate my attention. My 96 did the same thing some years ago; sometimes no starter sound whatsoever, then a few minutes later the engine would start normally.
I bought a new starter and solenoid and haven't had another problem. I didn't know how long the starter had been on the engine, so I went the entire starter/solenoid route rather than dealing only with the solenoid.
Even if you bypassed VATS, the starter solenoid must get power through both the start enable relay and the clutch safety switch (gear selector switch if automatic). I would first bypass the clutch safety switch and measure the voltage on the bypass wire when you hit crank position. There should be 12v on the bypass wire and the starter should crank. If no 12v, then you may have a defective start enable relay. Also, the ignition sw, crank position, may be defective too and should be checked out with a voltmeter.
