Default weird engine code performance

I have an engine code that pops on and off. I had some long tubes put on. no cats or muffs, just strait pipes to the rear. I had my AIR system removed because of no holes for the hookup in my headers. ANY WAY..the light will pop on almost anytime I hit the gas and or going uphill. Then it will shut off when I left off the gas or go down hill. Its not everytime but it sure feels like it. Only problem car has is a crazy acting up ICM sometimes not letting the car fire and sometimes it does. But some ultra strength grease ( forgot the name of it) from radio shack used because of advice from here seamed to work. My question is, how am I supposed to check the code if I cant get it to stay on? will it be stored? How do I check for a code on a OBD1..I know I have to use a paper clip but I forgot which spots to put it in?

Any time the check engine light comes on, the computer stores the code. You can buy an OBD1 scanner pretty cheap.
