Check for low brake fluid first, especially if you see the "brake" light too.
Beyond that, there is probably a code stored that you can retrieve with the FSM as a guide, or possibly someone has detailed it in a thread here, you could use the "search" function on the forum to look for it.

First try topping off the master cylinder as mentioned, the low fluid level switch will activate if it is just slightly low.
If that doesn't do the trick, see this link for some good ABS/ASR diagnostic information.

Last suggestion would be to ditch the Haynes, and buy the genuine Factory Service Manual, it will usually pay for itself on the first repair, you can find it here, or keep watching the C4 Parts for Sale forum and Ebay until you find a deal.
