Hey everyone.
There have been alot of rear gear related questions flying around so I thought I should pop in with one.
3 dana 36 rear ends 1 in the car and 2 not.
one is from an 87 L98 Automatic convertible
one is from an 89 L98 automatic coupe
and one is from a 94 or 95 LT1 Automatic convertible
My question is what gears are in these rears. Currently the one from the 89 coupe is in my car, but If one of the other rears has better gears I will swap the centersection.
Also what does it take to recal the speedo with different gears? Thanks-JOE-
I am in the process of changing the rearend gears of my 93 from 2:59 to 3:54. I purchased something called a speed calibrater (Part #PM265) from zip products for $159. It has four wires (1-ground,1-ignition 12V,1-VSS,1-computer) that you need to connect and that is supposedly it. It seems pretty simple but I have not connected it yet. Most people on the board seem to be changing the gears. The year of vehicle will probably dictate the method you are going to have to use.

I wouldn't use a speedo calibrator. Last year there was a post of a bunch of poeple having problems with these.

The 87 conv. should have 2.73 or 3.07. The 89 and 94/95 should be either 2.59 or 3.07. You should first check your code by under the center console. GM1 (2.59), GU2 (2.73), and G44 (3.07). The others you will need to spin the axles and count how many time the axle goes around. (3s time = 3.07, 2.5 = 2.59) unless they are still in the car and you can read the RPO codes. This also assumes, they have not been replaced or upgrade the gears.
