Just wondering were my timing should be set for my 89 with the following bolt-ons: cold air, Accel coil, BBK throttle body(size unknown, I'm thinking small), cat-back exhaust. Car has a surge at light throtlle, gets noticebly worse when A/C is on. Smoothes out under heavy throttle. EGR tested OK, new cats already installed, mass air cleaned.
Surging at partial constant throttle is normally an indication of a lean condition - if there aren't vacuum leaks , look to your fuel system - new filter , perhaps its a pump or regulator poblem.
As to timing , well the easiest way to set it is at factory default and to advance it in 2 degree increments (with tan wire disconnected when ever setting it) and buy an obd1 cable , download one of the free software datalogging programs like TTS datamaster and log your runs , make sure the car is over 94 Celcius and preferably hot weather , go WOT from low rpm , or put the car under severe load conditions and check your log for knock counts and see how and when it retards , as soon as you start seeing a lot of retard etc , then back off on your base timing.
