Hey guys I have a few pictures here of a part that I believe is faulty and has been causing my car to run poorly. It is the cylinder in the middle of all three pictures with the multiple vaccum tubes leading out of it. If anyone could help me out and give me a name for this I would appreciate it.
Now for the problem... My car is a 1985 auto and the idle is very rough. When in park or neutral it will usually idle around 1500 rpm and then when I throw it into gear it coughs and sputters around 6-700 rpm and then dies. Sometimes it will do this cold right when I start it up and sometimes it waits untill it gets hot to misbehave.
Suspecting a vaccum leak I sealed off the intake and blew some smoke inside. There was smoke escaping from the ring around the center of this part. That shouldn't happen right?
Man you scared me, experience tells me to beleive that tiny simple parts would be expensive. I have not checked the PCV valve, I will do that tomorrow when it's light out and after I don't have a chem test to study for anymore. Is the PCV valve the one on the passenger side that feeds into the throttle body or is it the one on the drivers side?
Any leak at all is too much, get that part replaced then go looking for any other vacuum leaks. You have to remember, the smoke was not under pressure, a vacuum leak is.
