OK, I am in the middle of putting in my new water pump and when I took a closer look at my water pump, the gasket does not match the holes very well... I also have a really rough edge where the channel meets the block, can I dremmel this down to make it smooth? I dont know what to do! I am about to take pics right now...
It should be okay, but if you are worried about it take your Dremmel and carefully smooth it out.
I have never attempted this... Should I really bother? Im tempted to just do the edge that has the lip and leave the rest... Do you think it will cause running temp changes or accelerated wear in the water pump?
Thanks for the quick response, I am litteraly outside sitting on my tire scraping the old gasket off the block
All will be ok just get that big burr off and don't let the metal fall into the pump.Deburr the dowel pin holes also.
Waterpump drain????think about it.
Make sure it all fits before you put sealant on the gaskets(put on car then remove)just to make sure the dowel holes, bolt holes and splines all line up.
Are you replacing your w/p seal in the timing cover?
You must use a special tool or marker cap.
Do not forget the drive coupler from your old pump
Just dremel the openings to match the gasket and you should be just fine. Using the dremel is easy; just use strokes and take your time. If you do you'll be surprised at the professional looking result you will get.
Ok, I dremmeled the edge and some of the rough parts... I think thats good enough, it came out pretty good, I will post pics later... Now, will that gasket stuff be good for the bolts or do I need the Teflon stuff?
If it does not say its for threads I wouldn't use it.I used what I used because it looked like what GM used from the factory.
I would think any pipe thread sealant would work.I just used the permatex on mine because it was at the auto parts store, right next to the HIGH TACK stuff I used for the gaskets.I have no leaks, some people have leaks and have to pull it apart a second time.

I would've just got new GM gaskets as I'm pretty sure that is a aftermarket waterpump. My motto is "if it don't look right, don't use it or get another" to verify that you received the correct part.Dermel should work though.Good luck & are you replacing opti while you are there? How are the front cover seals & oil pan gasket?Any leaks from those areas?

The ac delco part was double the price! Im not changing the opti and there are no oil leaks... im about to put the pump on now.
I used the felpro gaskets on mine.
Looks like your problem is the waterpump casting.
What brand pump did you buy?
was your old pump leaking from the weap hole?
I installed a drain on mine when I had it off.
That requires drilling and tapping a hole and installing a fitting and a hose.

I purchased a bosch water-pump. My old one was leaking onto the belt from the weep hole and it caused the power steering pump to stop working because the belt slipped. Its amazing how much HP the power steering uses!!! I dremeled it and took your advice with the thread sealer! I just went out for a shakedown and she performed flawlessly! Constant 193 degrees F and no leaks! I didnt bring her above 3k rpm except for once near the end of my 50mile shake down. After a few 100 miles the pump should be broken in and ready to go! Just in time for the Toys for Tots Run in AC!
Thanks for your fast advice/help! Its always nice for some second advice when you are not sure what to do!
