Hello Forum,
I couldn't find anything according to it in the forum: is there a possibility to read DTCs for a 1996 LT1 without a cable+scan tool or a code reader? Maybe someone has a Service Manual and there is a similar way as for the OBD-I LT1s? A sequence holding and pressing keys maybe? The OBD-I paper clip approach does not work right?
Thanks in advance and greetings from Germany,
Heiko
Yes, you read them by just using a paper clip/wire, etc., plugged into the Assemby Line Diagnostic Link.
Ground terminals 12 and 5 (or 4 and 12 - both 4 and 5 are grounds). Then turn the ignition key to on BUT DO NOT START THE ENGINE.
Then you'll need to review Section 8D-1 through 8D-10 for which dash buttons to press or just let the system just run automatically. Any code will be displayed on the dash.
Can't jumper and read PCM codes on a '96. OBD II uses a 4 digit code (technically 5 since the PCM codes start with a "P") but the speedo can only display three digits.
You can get some of the other codes by jumpering and going thru the CCM (ie ABS, ASR, etc)...just not PCM (engine / transmission) codes.
Thanks a lot guys, that was really helpful. Unfortunately I need to read the PCM DTCs because "Service Engine Soon" is on. I wanna find out what is wrong. The engine feels powerless, as it would only put out 200 HP.
And I understood I need an OBD-II code reader, either cable + PC software like Autotap or a standalone scanner right?
