12 years of bracket drag racing with the ZF and no problems. Have the Hurst short shifter
and Camaro flywheel with Spec 3+ clutch. You have to love the ZF when you line up against pro drag racers with automatics.
My 93 C4 is my first 6 speed, and it had 92k on it when I bought it. I'm really happy with it, too. The only thing I can compare it to is an 01 SS Camaro my Dad bought new, and I actually like the ZF more. Neither is/was modded (stock shifters), but the ZF just seems to be more consistant. I remember his SS being tough to get into reverse sometimes, and 6th gear almost ALL the time. But he drove it for 40k without mentioning it, and I honestly think it's because he forgot 6th was there! He had a 70 Mach 1 with a 4-speed Topoader when I was a kid, and I remember (as a grown-up) riding with him in the SS - he NEVER seemed to put it into 6th, even on the highway! It was wierd...but he was OK with 5th. lol
My Mustang has a T5, and well, I guess those have been OK to me. I've put them through a lot of abuse, and have killed 3 in about 13 years of tinkering with those. But they're so cheap...for what ALL 3 cost me, you couldn't buy one ZF (though I probably wouldn't have broken that if it was in there.)
Noisy in neutral, notchy, without a short throw the shift distance is too long. Shift effort is a bit much too. Maybe its just because I'm comparing it with my old C class I had before this.
That's strange. I experienced the opposite when I went from my '06 C6 to my '92; I think that the ZF shifts way, WAY better. My definition of "good shifting" is drag track, type shifting where shifts are fast, fast, FAST! The '06 let me down several times at the track, rejecting a gear completely, or going into "no man's land" between 1st and 3rd. (?) The ZF, I make passes that I'm proud of, every time. Haven't missed a gear yet. Stock clutch, FW, and shifter.
Both the T56 and the ZF are great trans's, IMO, but I prefer the ZF, so far.
Yes, I have to say, the ZF is far and away better to shift than my T56. The shifter is more precise and goes into gear more smoothly. I have a Hurst on the ZF and a UUC shifter on the T56.
I tend to prefer the gear ratios of the ZF also, except 6th which is really quite steep. 6th in the M12 is more usable, but 2nd is much less usable. It's like 1st and a half. I shift 1st to 3rd a lot in daily driving.

Completely. The T5 is not as good as the ZF or the T56 in any way...except weight, which the T5 weighs like 45 lbs. But it's SO cheap to obtain and maintain...it's worth it, IMO. And if you're not retarded, they actually last a while.

I agree. Shifting 1-2 in daily driving was pointless in my C6. How's that UUC shifter? I'm thinking of getting one for our CTS-V. Stocker shifts fine, but is sloppy as hell. Feels like a cable shifter.
tore 2nd and 3rd gears out of an 89 black label and replaced it with one from a 91. after a couple more seasons racing, sixth gear grinds if you don't granny shift it. but it is a lot smoother than a c5 trans.

My car came with the UUC. I've driven an '05 V with the stock shifter, and it is noticeably less "crisp" than mine. But I have an '06 and supposedly they made some trans changes to improve shift feel too.
Well, from my experience and what I've read, it seems that you'll wear out 3 or 4 motors before you wear out this transmission. Yes, it's shifting is quirky and it likes to be heard, but it works.
I had the pleasure of driving GreggPenn's car with the short throw and that was pretty amazing. Made getting back in mine feel like I was rowing a boat
I think I would like to go to a steel SM fly wheel w/ sprung clutch maybe even alum. I don't mind the noise if I know it's supposed to be there...It's the ones that aren't supposed to be there that get me, and I've heard a few$$$$
