My 96 has been running great with no issues forever and three days, but not realizing how low the fuel in the tank really was, I ran out of gas on Monday. After putting some gas in the tank (4 gallons), the engine will crank for days, but will not start. I can get it to start for a second using a shot of starter fluid in the throttle body, which is making me think it is either the fuel pump or the relay.
After killing the battery cranking the engine over, I also replaced the battery. When putting the key in the start position, I cannot hear the fuel pump prime like I used to. I have experienced a faint gas odor since owning the car, but assumed it was a very minor leak at the fuel rail or injector.
So, here are my questions:
Do you know where the relay can be found?
What is the procedure to replace the in-tank fuel pump (I have the FSM at home, and can look that up later if need be)?
What is the recommended performance fuel pump (My near-future plans include installing exhaust, headers, intake, and high flo injectors)?
With your experience, how likely is it to be the relay, given that it was working until running out of gas?

Raceteonix has a great fuel pump replacement kit.
2 choices for pump volume, I'm using the smaller pump and it should be good for the 400ish hp my 383 will put out when I get it built.

Thanks! I will check that out. What injectors are you planning on using?
