Default What is this?

finding a couple drops of oil on the ground (very small, like 2-3 drops a day, 87 convertible)

its dripping from the area shown in the picture, but it looks like its coming from above and its just coming around and picked that spot

what is that its leaking from? and any idea's where it might be originating from?

That is the dust cover that goes over the torque converter. Color of the oil will tell you where it is coming from. Black/brown is engine oil and it is coming from the rear main seal or possibly the pan/block mating surface at the rear , or even coming from above someplace like intake manifold or valve cover. If it is red/reddish brown it is coming from the front seal in the transmission.

it's oil.

it was doing this before, so I just had the rear main seal and oil pan gasket changed last week, pan was leaking, and seal was shot.. (also changed front and rear transmission seals while the tranny was out. by a reputable local transmission place)

one recent development is the lower intake gasket is leaking a little coolant, so we are changing that this weekend.

but it seems that the intake manifold and valve covers are a little too far forward of the leak to be it.

so im wondering if they botched the job? Ill know more when we change the gasket this weekend.

Removal of the dust cover will reveal a lot. There is always the possibility it's coming from the rear cam plug but this is kinda rare. If the area around the real main seal is wet again then they better try again. Ask them if they replaced the gasket between the block and the seal housing. If they took the seal housing out and didn't replace the gasket then that could be the source of your leak. Valve cover & rear of intake leaks will usually run down the rear of the block and could end up where your leak is appearing.

Its hard to tell with these cars since it so hard to look underneath without getting it off the ground.

hopefully it will be the valve cover/intake since we are changing them anyway, the transmission place said to bring it in monday and they will check it out too if its still a problem.

im guessing rear main seal area.

we are halfway through the intake gasket change, turned out to be a lot of work. Gasket was definitely bad.

we did find a pretty good leak from the oil sender / pressure switch, so we changed them both. there was alot of oil under it, so i'm pretty confident that was the leak i was seeing.

We are also changing everything we can while its apart.

if you look at the pic, the oil was NOT dripping from the hole in the cover, my buddy said if it were the rear main seal, oil would be catching inside that cover plate and dripping through the hole, since its directly over that cover... thats why the hole is there.

My advice is to stop guessing. Buy a $50 UV dye kit, and easily see exactly where it is coming from, then fix it. The "poke and hope" method is always more time and money in the long run (assuming you still have a leak).
