I have replaced the Electric Fan on my 86 Corvette, but it's still not always coming on when it should. Could it be a bad Relay, Coolant Tempreture Sensor or some other Sensor, Relay or Wiring.
Car randomly Overheating due to Fan not coming on.
I have tried the bypass trick listed in the Repair Manual and the fan seems to be fine.
The fan relay is operated by the ECM which gets coolant temp info from the temp sender on the front of the engine under the MAF. Normally the fan comes on at 228 F and goes off at 210 F.
The fan comes on at different temps depending on whether your A/C is on o not.
A/C off, fan should come on at 232 degrees, and go off at 215 degrees.
AC on, fan should come on at 225 and off at 212 degrees.
I have an 86, and it has always done that since I got it almost 15 years ago.
If your fan is intermittant, try changing the fan relay or removing the connector on the fan relay and inspecting it for overheated terminals. That was the problem with my car when I got it.
I fixed the fan relay connector and it's worked perfect since.
