Default Oil Filter Adapter Cross Threaded

Hey guys,

Well the idiot who had this vette before me 1990 VIN 8 put on the wrong oil filter and made it work. It should be a PH30 (fram of course). Anyways, the first thread is FUBAR and barely got the old filter off with channel locks and now I know why. I'm having a hard time finding the part to replace it with. In my service manual its called an "adapter, oil filter bypass valve". Looks like there was three bolts holding it in (this is the piece the filter threads onto. Is this somthing that could be easily replace in my driveway? If so where can I find the replacement? Thanks!

2 Bolts hold it on. Most auto parts stores, or the chevy dealer have them. Mail order performance companies such as Summitt Racing or Jegs do as well.
Expect to pay $15 to $20 for a new one, or about $5 for a used one.

Since it's just the first thread that's damaged I would cut that section off and reuse the part.

Assuming you don't have the factory oil cooler, lt $20 should buy a new one. And, two bolts (during an oil change) fixes your problem.

If you have an oil cooler, that's a different story. Since that part has been discontinued (from what I read), you'd have to either A) find a salvage part, B) fix/cut/grind off the bad thread, or C) delete the oil cooler and the adjoining hoses.

Option C would require a double male 3/4" hose coupler placed where the hose "T" is molded into the lower heater hose. (Or a complete new hose w/o that "T".

Edit:
In case you're not familiar with the factory oil cooler, they look like this.... (ignore the yellow arrows)

Thanks everyone, I ended up pulling out the two bolts and filing the damaged thread to make it work. Cleaned it up nice so I would get any of those metal shavings in there. Thanks again.
