Default 160 Thermostat?

I have a 180 in now and I've got the low temp fan switch in the head from Ecklers. Can I put a 160 stat in without reprograming the computer? Will it hurt anything? Thanks for any replies.

I bought my 87 just about 1 year ago. Soon thereafter I replaced the thermostat with a 180. I assume the car had a 180 in there before because I saw no difference in temperature changes (The car ran all year long in or our of traffic at about 190 Coolant and 195 Oil).

A few weeks ago I blew an intake manifold gasket and in the process of getting this fixed I changed a lot of components in the car (gave the car almost an all-new cooling system except for the radiator) and I decided to go ahead and install a 160 unit.

The problem I have is that my car now runs on the street at about 200 - 220 Coolant and my oil is at about 20 - 25 degrees above the coolant temperature at any one given time. On the freeway (as long as traffic is moving) the coolant temp is fine at about 170 with the oil temp also 20 - 25 degrees above.

Can anyone suggest an explanation or fix for this???

Technobudd, it sounds like your fans are not turning on. If they are, maybe you need to check the front of your radiator for trash build up. You should get the low temp fan switch from Eckler's. I just got done putting the 160 in and it runs great. I had a 180 in before and the 160 dropped the temps, oil and coolant. With the 180 in, my fans would come on alot and run for 3 or 4 minutes before they cut off, thats sitting at idle. Now the fans come on for about 1 minute and shut off. The 160 stat complements the low temp fan switch and I would recommend installing both of these parts. Also check your water pump and make sure its the right part number, I think I've heard of some people getting a pump that is made to spin the opposite direction.
