Default rear end trouble ?

I hope this question will make sense to some one, i herd a noise in the rear end thought it was u joints, Mechanic said wheel bearing , so i had him replace both sides, when i picked up the car i herd a rubbing noise like breakes, and if i accelerate then i here a poping noise, I then jacked up the car to look , first thing i see is that there are no splash /heat shields on at all in the back, both sides , would this have any affect on spacing? mechanic does not remember if they were on it or not, but he did say its an old car with 81000 miles what do i expect.so i am kind of in the dark on this one. One thing for sure new mechanic.

Sounds like he did not attach the half shafts right. What heat/splash shield are you talking about?

Look at the ujoint straps, they should be flush with yokes. If not, the ujoints are either not tightened or not on correctly.

There should be a dust shield on each side behind the rotor.

If he put new wheel bearings in I would almost bet he did not replace the teflon washer behind the wheel bearings. Let alone put in a new one like you should each time bearings are replaced. That is the cause of 99% of the popping noises in the rearend.

New mechanic is needed here.

He's got a 94. I don't think those have dust shields. My 89 doesn't have dust shields.

I believe the last year for the rear dust shields was 87. As 88 they did away with the parking brake shoe.
