Not sure if it's much help because your 96 might be considerably different, but since nobody else has answered I'll give you what I know. I have a 92 with FX3 selective ride control and when I got the service ride control light it was because the actuators on top of the shocks were worn out.

You will need the FSM to pull the codes for the ride control system.
Its pretty simple and will tell you what is not working the way it should.
