In my 86, The tranny fluid level is past the bends on the dipstick. Is this too much? I couldn't read where it's supposed to be. The tranny was cold, and in park. If it is to much, what harm could it do?
Hot and idling. Reason is fluid expands when hot so the level will rise over cold. And running because the level in the pan drops when the trans oil pump fills the torque converter with fluid. When not running half the fluid in the torque converter empies back into the trans pan raising the level and giving a false reading. It's best to check on a level surface after a drive.
Often your fluid will leave two different level marks on the back and front of the dipstick. Use the lower of the two readings. Use a quick in and out "stab" of the dipstick for best accuracy.
If you have too much you can suck some out with a fluid transfer pump through the dipstick if you have not added a trans drain plug.
