Default coolant & oil temps

Ok, forum! another annoying temp question!

what is the "proper" oil temp range for a 94? I cant remember what mine is at off hand, but it never goes above the first heavy line, into what i would guess is normal operating range? my oil pressure is fine (again, i cant remember at the moment). Is this ok?

The coolant tends to run in the 200-215 range for me, and the fan kicks on at 237? I would love to run it much cooler, i guess for peace of mind, but i dont intend to do any mods and find it crazy to spend $300 for a hypertech. Any way to get it running cooler without reprogramming?

Thanks all! You guys are good!

My oil temps run from around 210 - 240 (when I'm really pushing it). This seems to be normal.

The fans will kick on when you turn on the air conditioner (when ever the compressor is running, so sometimes I have to turn the A/C temp down to get it to kick on).

Noone has come up with any other way to change the fan temps than reprogramming the ECM. You can do this with the Hypertech (almost all that it is good for  ) or with a Laptop, cable harness and a program called LT1EDIT (there's a whole forum on just the LT1EDIT).

You could make a manual switch to turn on the fans.

Or live with what GM recommends, let it run hot.

Enjoy,

Check out the thread on the Water Wetter product that is going on, I think it's in the C4 tech forum... Some guys reporting temp drops of 10 - 15 degrees using it added to the coolant.

your normal operating temps should be between 200-235, i too think that is too hot for an engine. Most engines make most power at about 185-195 degrees. This problem comes up every summer and youre not the only person who gets worried about it.

get a 160 tstat, clean the front of your radiator (this is a MUST, temps may drop 15-20 degrees from just that), and get a chip

you dont have to get a hypertech, i dont know if Marcho Polo (the ECM section moderator) still burns chips but he could get you one done much cheaper than hypercrap.

Try just the 160 thermostat first. I thought I was gonna have to buy a chip to turn the fans on earlier also, but it turned out by just changing the thermostat, my temp never goes over 213 and running down the road at about 190-195.

Now, before everybody jumps all over me, I KNOW that just changing the thermostat SHOULDN't lower the temp...after all, once it gets to 180 (stock thermostat) its open...period. But maybe the 160 stat opening that much sooner is making the difference? I don't know...I sort of suspect that my stock thermostat was getting old (yours might be too) and was no longer opening at 180...more like 200...or maybe not at all.

At any rate, try the thermostat first, clean in front of the radiator...and see what that does.

If I were you, there is one mod I would make. I would do a throttle body bypass. It really improved my performance...and now I can rest my hand on the throttle body without getting third degree burns.
