Default 89 overheating problems

I just re-installed my heads. Since putting my car back together, Im having overheating issues. When I put it back together I put all 3 coolent sensor and senders in. It seems like my heat gauge is inaccurate now also.

I went thru the diagnosis chart on 6E3-C12-3 from my FSM im still having issues somewhere. I have cleaned in between the radiater and conds. My radiater is good. I run the car with my AutoXray 500 and also noticed that my temp gauge is showing hotter than my scanner temp.

I think im having issues with my main fan not coming on.
I put a new t-stat in also.
Im all ears.

Thanks for replies.

Mike

the senders may be reading a pocket of air that is trapped in the system?

Did you drill a 1/16th hole in the t-stat? that helps with the air pocket. There is a burping procedure in teh FSM.

Its been burped. My new stat had a small hole drilled in it with a brass flapper stop on it.

I have the 2 fan set up. Seems like the aux. fan is working fine. Something I did on R&R must not be right.

On my FSM flow chart, it says to unplug AC press fan control switch. When I do this my main fan runs. Then says possible fan control switch. This is located on the high side of AC line. Will I lose freon charge to replace this?

Mike, you were not having issues with your Vette. I wonder WTH it could be. I assume you mark all sensors as you disassembled them. If your fans are not coming on, check all connections.

I got my sensors right, because they match up to the plugs. My temp gauge is controlled by the sender on the head on pass. side? I think. My old wire had been cooked over the years by the exhaust, so I spliced a new wire in there, that is longer than the original wire.

I got the sensors at O'riely (Kragan).

My oil temp gauge seems more accurate than my water temp gauge acording to my scanner.

And now also, my mpg and range portion of my dash is erratic. Never before.

It is likely an air pocket.
Jack the front end up as high as you can get it, let it cool completely, then pack the system.

Don't sweat it yet Mike. Happened to me once, and drove me crazy.
With the nose as high as you can get it, it purges the air much easier while filling.

Mike,

It would seem to me that the Scanner, and the dash guage both use the "same" sensor data. If this is true, then there is a calibration error!

mpg/range display problems?

Did you disturb a body ground or some other wireing while performing the top end?

it seems there is a commom problem that might be affecting the dash read outs!

just a thaught!!

I always pack mine on my driveway which runs up hill. Has always worked great for me.

Also, Mike, when I replaced my driver's side head mounted temp sensor plug, I had my local dealer install a new wire in the sensor. There is a little spear shaped pin in the plug which fits snugly into the sensor. The dealerships have a tool which will easily extract the pin. You can then solder a new wire onto the pin and snap it back into place. Once I had the new pin and wire in place, I soldered the new plug & wire into the old wiring harness up near the alternator. This worked well yielding no problems and it also looks like a new OEM installation.
