I help friends do it that way.
But I also notice the area leeking oil.

I dropped the pan down 1/2" or so. without removing the bolts and had better results. Help when you have a lift

How bad is it laking ? I once fixed one by spraying the crap out of it with carb cleaner and then forcing black RTV into it with my finger tips. Messy but it worked.
Oh yea, you should post this in Tech.

Possible but not fun. Trimming the inside corners of the timing chain cover helps but getting the cover back on is a PITA. Did it once.

Not on a '87+ engine like yours.
The timing cover seal is part of the one piece oil pan gasket ; not a seperate seal as used on the older engines

just a quick bump.

I have a 1991 L98 and have to replace that seal. The timing chain cover is off and I will be getting a new cover and gasket kit.

The oil pan was not going to be pulled.

The gasket kits come with one of the new U shaped rubber gaskets.

Any recommendations on how to go about this and not have it leak?

Thanks,

Mike

The felpro gasket kit I fitted had the same,I put a smear of RTV on the gasket and especially on the area were the edge where the gasket touches the block,I undid th first couple of sump bolts.
Its strange the gasket I removed actually was recessed and fitted about 1/4" down either side of the sump, this seemed like a good idea, dont know what make it was.

And sorry Guys should have posted in Tech, first time

Rodj is correct,I did not realise they were one piece, and it came away easily(perished?).When I purchased a new timing case seal kit,I just used the one that came with it ..Guess I may have to replace the one piece oil pan gasket in the future.

Not sure of the differences in the C4 years, but on a '96 it requires dropping the oil pan. No biggee really. Remove starter, flywheel dust shield, oil level sensor, etc..... Loosen engine mount bolts to the last 3 threads or so and jack up the engine slowly to get a little clearance. I put the jack, with small oak board on pad, to lift at tranny. Make sure you clean the contact surfaces really well with brake cleaner. Go to the GM dealer and get the sealant, the one that is a short tube that goes in a caulking gun. Put an inch or so thick bead at the four points described in manual, put the gasket onto the block and then lift the oil pan into place. You may have to rotate the crank to get clearance at front of engine. You may as well wipe old oil off of everything because it will stay clean a long, long time.
