Has anyone had this problem My 1992 LT1 is setting code 42 EST after car starts and start to drive. Car is running fine and starting ever time so far. SES light will come on wile driving and will go off sometimes and come back on. If anyone had this problem and had it corrected I really like to know what let to fixing the problem. I'm going to Englist Town this Saturday I really hope I can get it fixed before then. Note car sat all winter outside under cover. Drove car all summer and fall and never once had the SES light come on. I need all the Help I can get thanks Guys and girls
Code 42 is the Electronic Spark Timing circut. Your problem may just be in the connections between the ignition module and the ECM. (dirty/loose) especially if the car is running OK. It could also be in the ECM itself.....
Good luck
I don't know if a code 42 is the same in your 92 as it is in my 87, but I have been getting the same code frequently. The car will be running fine and will suddenly stumble. Then the Service Engine Light comes on and the car acts strange and runs cinda rough until I turn it off for a minute. Once re-started, it runs fine again until it stumbles again...maybe in a few minutes, maybe in a few days. Someone earlier said they had the same problem and had to replace the ECM! :cuss
Sorry to hear of your problem. Question, on your wires...would you mind if the replacements I owed you we're Yellow 8.8? Seeing it's not a show car, I can get that for you...and boots-terminals. Lemme know.
Jeff, How's the car doin'? I am going to see mine tomorrow. It was ripped apart Monday for the Intake Gasket. I'll hope to have it back soon!
First I like to thank the 2 guys and Jay who posted. I was just wondering out of all the people on the forum this is all the help I could get? There could be a post about what color floor mats I should buy and there will be 100 replies this really bugs me! Just want to get this across and I'm not the only one that feels this way I know that. :mad
The car is running great except for the code 42 I keep getting. I ordered a new ECM today from Mid America. Should have it in on Friday. I hope it takes care of this problem, it's a pain when it does what it does. I took it for a 100 mile trip tonight, and it never stumbled until I was pulling back into town, then it did it again.
I also have a couple wires that got down on the headers and got burned! Do you have a source for good inexpensive wires? I noticed from your post above that you might have some yellow wires! You know yellow is my color and I do need some 8.8mm wires. Are they Accel, or Taylor? Just wondering!
I've got a race lined up with a 2000 Trans Am on laughing gas! I don't know how much he's spraying, but I hear he runs in the 11's when he sprays! Should be interesting...and here I am with worn out Yokys on the back :cry I may have to con him into a rolling start. He's running a 6 speed and I don't think has much race experiance, so I could pull enough on the start to make up for these dang 2:73's!
I hear ya dood. There seems to be a lot of knowledge on this forum. Sometimes when you need lots of feedback you KNOW is there isn't applied to you. It's frustrating. I'm sure a few more responses will find their way in.
Jeff,
Regarding the wires...I made John G a deal...If He put in my new MSD's which are all 90 deg boot now seeing I saw the car C O M P L E T E today :D, Then I'd give Him my 25K Mile Accel 8.8 Wires. A speed shop I know has a HUGE spool of 8.8,and I think the boots/terminals are fairly inexpensive. John already stated He'd like to stick with all black wires which is fine by me. Yes Jeff, the car is done, super ram was a bitch as we all knew...and it's possibly going to make a run or two to check MPH at E town Saturday.
Talk to you later, and keep in touch. E mail me on the wires...Tell me how many feet you need and I can price it for you.
John,
Dont know much about the LT1 set up,but maybe someone here who does will eventually reply.Maybe David F,if he sees this post, hes da man to get the fix.
For now,it sounds like it may be a false code and intermitten problem and youre not getting any driveability problems from what Ive seen.
I would suggest if the car is running fine, disconnect the negative from the battery for a minute to clear the code and then hook it back up and go drive around for a little while, varying speed and load on the motor.See if it comes back.
Hope some more replies come later.Keeping this TTT.
:)
Thanks I have been working on the problem and hope to be on the right track to fixing it. It is something crazy because with this code the car should not even run and it's running fine. I taped into the EST wire that goes from the Ignition coil driver to the ECM and with my multi meter did a min max reading on the voltage on the circuit and when the light would come on the voltage dive down a bit to like almost half a volt. It's weird when the light comes on ever time the Fans would come on and the idle dropped then the light came on. The car has a Fast Chip in it that I put in last year so the fans sometime come on right when the car starts up but the car had no problem all of last year when I was driving it. only started when I brought it out of storage witch was in my back yard with a cover over it.
Car is fixed the first error I make was thinking it was code 42 when it was 43 knock sensor fault. Found to be a bad Knock sensor on the passenger side of motor.
 It's got that LT1 spunk as well! Nails you in the back of your seat. In tomorrow's air, I think it'll do a new personal best. See you shortly.
John, I am also having a code 43. I just rebuilt my engine and upgraded to the newer style opti. Diacom says that a code 43 is a EST malfunction. I did find in a code book that a code 43 could also be a knock sensor problem. This book was not 92 specific. Where did you find this info, and how did you decide that a knock sensor was bad?
Maybe it was going bad since last season. John ripped off a 13.68 yesterday with the car and did NOTHING to it since the last time it was at the track in 2001. Trap speed was 101 which wasn't too shabby. There's more in it as He had synchro troubles in the ZF.
