I am about to repaint my valve covers, and wanted to know what kind I should use to get the original factory color. I should be able to sand blast them, right?
Sandblasting wont do anything but clean the powder coat. The coating is stronger then the magnesium your valve covers are made from. In other words, if you used a ruff enough grit sand that would remove the power coat, it would eat away the magnesium. Soft metals like magnesium and aluminum need to be bead blasted with glass bead. But glass bead wont remove powder coat.
To remove the powder coat you need to use a chemical powder coat stripper. (Paint stripper wont work either)
For the color, MA motorworks sells the correct shade of silver in spray cans for $20. But IMHO you can find a shade of silver at auto zone that would be close enough not to matter. It's not like your color matching panels.
It looks like the previous owner had repainted them. The paint looks really bad. So if I just sand blasted them it would have the same powder coat that's on the plenum and runners?
