I have an 89 L98 with Melrose long tubes, ported big mouth intake, ported stock plenum and slp runners, 28# injectors, chip, egr delete, 52mm tb, and cut lid. Otherwise stock. I'm told I should upgrade my ignition so I purchased a Summit Racing Street and Strip digital Iginiton (SUM-850600) http://www.summitracing.com/parts/sum-850600/
and am looking at also adding an MSD 8366 Distributor http://www.summitracing.com/parts/MSD-8366/.
Are these parts going play well together?
Your MSD link is right but your text is wrong, just make sure you order the one in your link, the PN is 8366. You'll also need an external coil to go with it.
Don't know anything about the Summit boxes but so far I've been quite pleased with all of the Summit brand products I've seen/used.
Leave the ignition alone.....especially if your car is going to make hp peaks below 5,000 RPM with the TPI set up.
People are constantly b*tching about MSD and other aftermarket ignition products on here. The vast majority of the people complaining have them on cars that didn't need them in the first place.
With the mods listed, your car will be just fine with a stock ignition system. At most go get yourself a good coil, make sure that everything else is in good condition, and call it a day.

I agree with the majority of the guys. Save your money. I'm running the stock ('84) Delco ignition on my turbo 355 and it works like a charm. (It's not red and shiny, though. )

The only thing you NEED is to stop listening to the person who gave you that advice! Probably was someone who just likes spending money on their toy(s).
The stock HEI ignition system is VERY good -- especially for the rpms you're running.
I prefer to run a divorced coil setup. Not sure I am fond of having the coil on top of the dist. I also needed it for my HSR setup. That said, if I didn't have to change it, I wouldn't. If I were to change the distributor because it was worn or had tons of miles on it, I would go with the 8366 distributor and a coil with a harness for about $20 to do it.
one advantage of the hei distributor over the smaller msd is it is larger in diameter at the cap which prevents arcing from one terminal to another. pull the hei, shim the shaft to remove excess play and put in a new module. i shimmed and put in a davis module in mine and it spins to 6500 with no issues.
I think you should have kept your parts in the same family, and MSD's tech line is excellent, they dont talk down to you when you have questions or problems, and their parts are designed to work together, my 2c's
