I have an 86 Coupe, all stock. I would like to know if anyone has come across an exhaust system that can significantly reduce exhaust resonance. Thanks.
This is a fairly common problem and there are a variety of archived responses to your question. First, do a search of the archived topics on this subject you may find an answer to your question. Second you may want to provide more information, such as the type of exhaust you have on your car now and what you are trying to achieve.
As for myself, I took a set of Flowmaster mufflers off my 92 and replaced them with a set of Hooker Aerochamber mufflers from Summit for about $50 a piece. It helped to reduce the resonance but not totally eliminate it. Some people say cross over pipes help others said they didn't do anything. And lastly if you find something that works let us know.
I have to say it once again, Gearing plays a BIG BIG part in resonance. Ask anyone with 2.59's and a decent exhaust. It drones and drones at highway speed. I had the same problem, and even tried putting the factory exhaust back on(BIG MISTAKE) not only did it kill about 80-100 HP no lie, it didn't solve the drone. It was still there, only quieter. Something good DID come out of that...I had the headers-y pipe re-coated(Looks like they'll need it again..but o well). In short, the 3.45's solved my problem. There is just something about that range that drives us all nuts. 3.07s should even be better. Minimum gears in an lt1 should be 3.54 (Or a track car 3.73)whereas the L98 would like up to a 3.45 max.
[EDIT] John G 92 has a Dyno-max exhaust with the supposed RESONANCE ELIMINATOR on His '87 with 2.59's. Same thing. Don't buy in to that rear Y pipe is a problem solver. Just for reference.
Would adding the Crossover tube help on my 89 Coupe that has true dual exhaust without cats? It only has flowmaster mufflers. And where would the best location be for the crossover?
Nice exhaust system Quik86, what is it?? I'm thinking of going with a catless set up but not sure which exhaust system will 1) look the best on my 89 2) sound good but not too loud 3) I would love to squeeze out some more HP....
I have an '86 and installed the LT1 type mufflers sold by Corvette Central. They design and build these mufflers. At idle and low rpm's they are quite quiet, but at full pedal they sound great. There is absolutely zero resonance from these mufflers. I'm very happy with the sound and the performance.

I just paid three and a half bills for mine.
I assume you're not talking about the direct replacement units with dual three inch stainless tips. Really nice looking pieces, and you can literally look in the inlet and see out the outlet.
By the way, doesn't that cross over on the Y give more torque? I've heard that it does by helping out the pressure produced from the firing order of the motor.

A crossover makes sense on a dual exhaust system. I don't understand the point of it on a single exhaust that splits into a y-pipe. Look at the picture, the exhaust pulses between the two banks are already equalized once they go into a common pipe. The two branches of the y-pipe all feed from the exact same source and are the same length, geometry, and diameter, so the pressure in them is identical. Either it's a marketing gimmick or I am completely missing the point. Again, it's completely different on a dual exhaust system.
There was one post which said to block off on of te exits on each muffler with a rag or something and to run the car. I tried it and it sounded perfect, still hi-perf and throaty, but no resonance. The same post also said to use some plumbers parts to create a cap or block off which can be removed when needed. I cant find it anymore, but if someone figures out how to cap one of the exits, please post it. I cant hear a darn thing when I am in the car due to the resonance.
Jay, how did you get the fron of your car so low? I lowered mine and it only came down less than an inch.
