Re: please help coolant problem!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (vent69)
You definetly have some cooling problems. It is not normal. What is youre temp. reading? It could be a stuck or improper degree thermostat, clogged radiator, etc. Not knowing the history of youre vehicle, first thing I would do is drain the system, install the proper stat, then go from there. You could run into some serious and costly head damage if you continue to allow it to run hot or overheat. Also check the fan(s) to see if they are activating at the proper temp. as well as both fans coming on when you turn on your A.C.. If this is too much to tackle on your own. Make some inquires as to who in your area is capable of checking out the system. Too bad youre not my neighbor!! Good Luck

225 is way too high for normal driving. Mine will go about that high when idling initially but the fans will come on and temp will then drop back to 195-200. I would look first to see if the expansion tank is full. With the engine cold, remove the cap and see where the coolant level is. It should be right at the base of the neck. Coolant is sucked in from the overflow container when needed and then pushed back out. Make sure the coolant in the overflow is at the mark for cold when you check the expansion tank and fill both with coolant if needed.
Another possibility is a stuck thermostat. Remove it and place it in pot of water. Heat the water and check with a thermometer to see when the stat opens; it should be 195 if stock. The're cheap, so you may just want to replace it anyway. Do the cooling fans come on when the temp rises? Run with the A/C on and that should force the second fan to stay on. Does the temp go down? this could be an indication that the relays aren't working or the fans themselves are not running. You will hear them come on even with the engine running.
Look for any debris in the lower portion of the radiator, espciallly between the A/C condenser and the radiator. You can use a water or air hose to push out any leaves, dirt, small animals or even the parts that fell off the Mustang in front of you!
A good system flush is the next thing. There could be blockages in the radiator or just gunk anywhere in the system. A radiator shop would be the best bet for this as they can also do a pressure test of the system to make sure there are no leaks that would cause coolant loss.
