I found a few threads that mention aspects of replacing the base plate, but nothing comprehensive. I can use the book, but if anyone knows of another source fill me in. Thanks!
I don't know what the manual says about changing the oil & filter after the job, but do it.
Use a shop vac to clean out any particles that fall into the ports or the valley.
I like to pour 2 quarts of oil down into the valley to flush out any old coolant & particles that might be in there.
The key to a good job is keep the surfaces free from oil so the rtv will seal.
To speed up reassembly I put bolts into ziplocs with labels as I disassemble.
Use care when handling the hard plastic vacuum hoses; if one breaks it can be spliced with rubber tubing.
To assure good RTV grip I roughen the china walls & mating intake base surfaces as well as ding the walls a bit. Two beads of RTV along the china walls seem to minimize the chance of a leak. I also trail a bit of RTV up onto the gaskets.
Once the base has come in contact with the fresh RTV it should not be moved laterally.
Once the base has been torqued to spec, let it stand at least 24 hrs for the RTV to cure.
