Default Synthetic Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF)

I getting ready to buy some ATF for my newly rebuilt 700r4 what type of ATF should I use.

I been thinking of buying AMSOIL Synthetic Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) $130.00 but is it worth the extra money or just get the standered stuff.

Is Walmart stuff for $50.00 good enough.

I read All standered ATF should be made the same.

Cheeper would be better but I know sometimes it better to spend the money than go cheep.

What I have gathered Full Syn last longer and runs cooler.

I know cooler the trans longer it last per the ATF Manufactures.

But in real life is Full Syn worth the extra money or just change out the standered stuff with new filter out every 30000 miles is better for the trans.

Mobil 1 is good stuff but the same price is AMSOIL.

I use Valvoline VR1 Racing oil in the motor for the Zinc I am using a Flat tapped Hyd cam.

Default trans fluid

Have you considered adding a transcooler (B&M or Hayden)With a good quality synthetic and cooler temps ,the fluid will last longer, so the added cost is negligible. Also a neodymium magnet epoxied to the pan or magnetic drain plug will help keep small particles of metal on the bottom of the pan.

FYI, stock 700r4 and 4l60e tansmissions have magnets placed inside the bottom of the pan. They don't need to be epoxied because they stick to the metal pan. There is an indentation in the pan bottom to locate the magnet.

Thanks for the information, can you imagine, engineers doing something an amateur thinks about? Makes one re-think some of the value of some of the modifications that are available on todays market.

Where did you install cooler. With the BTU's mentioned the cooler must be close 11 x7 x 1 1/2 inches. If installed in front of A/C condenser, did it cut down on air flow and raise coolant temperature? Thanks in advance.

I running the Trans cooler in front side of the right side of the rad and a Engine oil cooler on the left side of the rad so far I dont have any over heating issues.

The engine oil runs about 170 when the Water temp gets to 220 before the fans kick on this is sitting still with no air flow going though the Rad.

I planning on replacing my tranmission filter. It's a stock 93 LT1 with 63,000 miles on it. Would I be ok refilling with GM Dexron VI?

Thanks,
Steve

I used Amsoil in my trans. Search for Subdriver on this forum. He a sponser and a distributor. I was shipped a gallon of synthetic trans fluid, 2 qts of synthetic differential fluid, and the pump for around $76 shipped to my house. I know he'll give a great deal and you'll be happy with Amsoil, I am.

A gallon of synthetic is less than half the capacity of the tranny. I guess it's ok to mix?
