Default 1990 injector question......?

Hi guys, I usually hang out with the old dudes on the C1+2 side but this Q. is about a friends 90. The car was running like crap and the GM dealer is saying it needs all new injectors (something about electrical resistance) which means 0 to me! They want $2500 for the job which seems outrageous to me for a car that's worth maybe 10K on a good day. Whadduya think, thanks.

An Injector swap should cost around $600 labor plus the stock injectors which are about $60 a piece for a 90 TPI Vette.

Or your friend can buy a modern set of 8 Bosch III injectors for $169 from supporting vendor FIC (AKA-Jon Banner) Very Highly Recommended and have them installed by another shop. http://fuelinjectorconnection.com/sh...ewCat&catId=65

I just did this job and it was easy! There is a step by step in the DIY. The injectors with gaskets cost like $275.00 from FIC. I changed out all the injectors and had the car running again in under an hour. I was told the ethonal in todays fuel eats up the old injectors. You can buy new injectors for a Duramax diesel for less then $2500.

They are trying to say that most likely your friend has the original injectors(Multecs which are "crap"). The ohmn resistence on the injectors cold should be 16.5 ohmns +/- .5 ohmns.
Go with the suggestion above ...get the Bosch III's as stated.
I have the Bosch lll's in my 1990 now and work great. I did the swap myself but the GM dealership wanted about 4-1/2 hours of labour.

Thanks guys, I just talked to him and he's going to get his black beauty out of the dealers asap.

Update, Bosch III's ordered from FIC and on their way, thanks again.

now, where's the DIY, John was telling me they go in a little different from the stock ones. I ordered gaskets too, is that all I should need.....?

John made me laugh when he called the dealer "stealerships"

I swear you do not need the DIY, but if you want them just do a search.

Unhook your throttle body, 4 bolts and let it hang, do not undo any coolant hoses.

Unhook your throttle cable and kick down, then unbolt the linkage from the plentum

At the back of the plentum on the driver side is a steel hose that goes to the brake booster, unbolt.

Before you take any of your intake apart blow the intake clean!! I washed mine with degreaser and a pressure washer the day before.

Take your intake ruuner bolts out of the Plen and the remove the plen. Now unbolt your intake runners and remove them.

All of your injectors will come out with the fuel rail. Take a screw driver and turn the clips on your injectors so you can get them off the rail. The new injectors do not need the clips so don't worry if you break any.

This job just looks like it would be bad but it is a cake walk I swear, it took me 3 times as long to just change the spark plugs on the pass side of the car. Changing the elect antenna was more work!!

Thanks for that, John said they come with instructions and the clips are different on the Bosch, and they go in a little different. I'd just like to see a blow up of the parts first. Ha, I'm used to carburetors, and the throttle body unit on my 90 Chev 350 truck. Are they similar?

On the Bosch lll's; you DO NOT use the clips from the Multecs....the lll's are a bit shorter..its in the instructions from Jon at FIC.
Just mark the bolts off the runners and stick them on cardboard(different lengths). Just common sense on diassembly and assembly.
Just take your time and mark everything you take off..he will have to remove a fair bit to make all come off. May be a good time to clean the plenum and runners and repaint for a clean look.
Good luck to your friend !!!!!!

No need to remove runners unless you want to clean & paint, at least I didn't have to on my 89.

I just finished the injector job on my '90 with Bosch III's I got from John and the car is fantastic!

I actually replaced everything from the fuel tank up except for the tank, lines and rails for under $500 and that includes a new idle control valve.

The Bosch III's install as smooth as glass, just follow John's instructions including using soap instead of oil or grease on the "O" rings.

I did all the wrenching...Crap, I made nasty old helicopters fly so a 90 'Vette is a cakewalk

When I get home from this trip I'll post some pic's I took of the final product.

I'd recommend getting the Viton seal kit from FIC as well. That way you can tear the rail apart and replace the o-rings. It is more work, but would suck to have to tear it apart again later to replace a leaking o-ring. Or if an o-ring leaks, it could cause a fire.

I'd recommend doing a scan before and after the injector swap to make sure you don't run lean afterwards.

I ran a 143 BLM with the Bosch lll's on my 1990. I bumped the fuel pressure up to 50# and relocated the Mat sensor(90's were Speed Density) and run now between 130-132 BLM.

Is that 50# with the FPR disconnected?

I just got done with this exact swap. I actaully started with the car getting towed to me (from a friend) as I am a Tech (Porsche...) and work on this guys cars.... I ended up doing head gaskets, once it was all back together I started it up, ran great..... Till it got hot, then it wouldn't run for ****... ended up replacing the fuel pump cause it sounded like it had gravel in it, even though it had good fuel pressure and volume. Long story short, my injectors were ok cold 12-16 ohms( I said OK, not GOOD) but hot, on was like 3.4 Ohms... AHHHH The Bosch III i am listening to it idle right now actually.... Runs GREAT throttle response is awesome... Now i just need to fix the fluctuating idle and ship this bitch.... If you have any questions/problems your welcome to PM me for my phone # ... Crazy Canadians need to stick together....
