Default Auto- 6-Speed Conversion L98

Im looking in to swapping the auto tranny out of my 86 L98, how much in general would this swap cost?
Ive had a 93 for 3 years that im leaving all oem, then this 86 i want to swap to 6-speed however i havent swapped a Tranny before, only replaced. I dont know the specifics of any tranny's to swap in, i want to put in what would be an original 6-speed for the year. What transmissions would be best?

ZF6 can be bought cheaper than in above link
2100 for trans plus $350 for bell housing

there was no "original 6-speed for the year" as there were no 6 speed manuals in the 1986 model year. You opted for either the 4+3 manual or the 700R4 auto...

You are better off going to Keisler Automotive and doing the 5 speed swap......JMHO.....

no!!!!!

the ZF6 is a bolt up if you have the 1piece rear seal. There is an adapter flywheel for the two piece. For the nay-sayers, 86 was the transition year for 1pc seals.

Though, if you are looking at power down the road you'd be better of with a "typica'"push type clutch and/or transmission.

Unless you really want to row gears or road race is your game, then an automatic will do everything you need. upgrade to a 4l80 tranny if needed.

Unless you can find a orginal ZF6 Dual Mass FW ($$$) ,you don't need a adapter;
You just use whatever FW suits the engine you have.
If you read Joe's ZF6 install write up in the link above, you just use a early 4+3 ( or any 153 tooth FW ) from a 2 pce seal engine

If you go with a McLeod Dual disc clutch for the replacement ZF clutch, it will handle 1200hp. I run that in my car with a black tag ZF. It will handle all you can throw at it. It's just hard on parts. But there are alot of options for ZF clutches.

I am in the process of doing this swap to my 87. The tranny I got from the link listed above. Shop around. I got a real nice Dual Mass from a CF member, used bell housing off Ebay. I have a total of about $2550.00 in all the parts.

I have about $2000 in my zf swap including new clutch and pressure plate, master and slave, yoke and all new u-joints. Hardest part was figuring out where to cut the drive shaft tunnel but now I see they make a patch panel for that.

You missed my point completely.........

the OP asked about "original 6 speed for that year"......there was none.....became an option in 89......I know plenty about the conversion....look at my sig.......have a two piece rear main too...
