1985 Ignition switch installation trouble
Hello, I am new to the site but have been a Corvette fan from birth. Here is my dilemma; I pulled the steering wheel on my 1985 Corvette to replace the broken lock cylinder, key ignition switch. Got it replaced and started putting things back together but haven't figured out how to compress the upper bearing spring to install the carrier assembly, steering shaft lock and "C" clip retainer. Is there a special tool that I need to get this back together? I have done everything I can think of, gone to all of the local auto parts store for advice but to no avail. Now I turn to the experts for the answer and direction. Please help, I miss driving my sweetheart. Thanks Whiz

Yes there is a special tool for that. It screws on to the shaft, then a bracket goes over that part and a big nut on the threaded end of it. You tighten the nut down and it pushes the lock plate until you can get the clip on the shaft. Hope that's not to hard to follow. Not sure how you got it apart without the tool.
If you can't find one, check for a local Snap On or MAC distributer near you. A local repair shop should be able to give you a phone#.
