Default grinding from back

87 vert

heres the thing, when on the highway, over about 60 mph. I get a grinding noise from the back when i turn SLIGHTLY right (like to change lanes). doesnt do it on left turns

I searched the board, but couldn't find something similar. I did change the gear box oil (with additive), but it still does it.

doesn't seem to do it (or at least not noticeably) at lower speeds.

any idea what to check or what it might be?

thanks

Sounds like a wheel bearing issue. Jack the car up and find the loose bearing by shaking the wheel at 6 and 12 o'clock. Be certain that you are not fooled by loose u-joints when doing the 6 and 12 shake. Bearings make a growling noise when they go bad. Just find which one.

but it only happens with slight turns (one direction, right), at higher speeds.

I thought bearings would make noise in all directions and when going straight.

Good chance your left bearing is bad. When you turn right, the left side of the car is loaded and the bearing makes more noise. Jack up the left rear side, hold the tire at the 12:00 and 6:00 positions and push back and forth. A small amout of play (.020) is normal. If there is more, the bearing is shot.

I agree with everyone(wheel bearing).Wheel bearings almost always make a grinding noise when only turning in one direction(right or left). This is because the inside or outside bearing & race is worn out.Wheel bearings can make a noise just driving the vehicle & while turning in either direction if the bearing is severly damaged.Very rarely do both bearings & races go bad at the same time on a wheel bearing. It will happen if someone drives on a bad wheel bearing for awhile. The metal shaving damage the other bearing & race inside the wheel bearing.Remember, there is 2 bearings & races inside of 1 wheel bearing(at the front & rear of wheel bearing assembly/unit).95 percent of the time,a bad right side wheel bearing will make the grinding sound
while turning left & vise-versa.Hope this helps

Im going to check this out tomorrow.. the car also has just reached 100K miles, so the miles are about right for bearings.

plus, since i broke 100K, everything that is suppose to be changed at 100K miles, has broken on this car.

anything else i should just change at 100K?!?!?

Just wanted to leave an update for those google searchers...

changed both rear bearing hubs and problem solved.

thanks to everyone.

also, FYI: I bought a pair of rear hub bearings on ebay for $114/pair, turned out to be the exact same brand mamotorworks sells for $150 each.
