Okay I read the X-ray manual. I have the GM manual and have read that. My '89 occasionallly throws a code but I don't get a CEL. When this occurs my main and aux fans run all the time the engine is running. I put the X-Ray on it and immediately the code clears but I never get anything on my X-Ray telling me what the code was. Think I was better off using the jumper deal and counting the blinking CEL. Has anyone ever experience this and know which sensor is throwing the code? My car runs pretty cool. I have 180 in it but it did it before I changed stats. I thought temp sensor but the X-ray shows it with the correct temp and it does vary as it should. I have noticed that every time it gets into this loop it would be after the battery has run down. It doesnt get driven much in the winter months. Bad ECM?

Re: Auto Xray and my Vette (jer35073)
Jack that is strange. Don't know why it would go into diagnostic mode or limp home mode and set a light but no code. I would at least re-set the connectors on the ECM. Also remove and clean (make sure you remove the bolts) the battery connections.
If it does it again, check the +5V lead to the TPS and see what voltage you are getting there (while it's doing it).
I had to replace my 89 ECM and there is a new part number, according to David F these ECM's have issues! If you go the replacement route make sure you get a GM rebuilt, it will be the new part number and have the right corrections. I got mine from Jeff Koop.
Good Luck.
Pete
[EDIT]
Orginal 89 ECM = 1227165 (they had problems with this ECM)
Replacement 89 ECM = 16198259
If you have the 1227165 it's probably on borrowed time. If you think it's the ecm and you have to replace, remember to remove the chip from the existing as it does not come with the replacement.
I have the X-Ray configured correctly. I think I agree with everyone the ECM needs to be replaced. So when the fans are on it is in limp home mode. Interesting. So the replacements that are in Eklers and Mid South you guys don't recommend but instead buy the original GM. I don't know if I can offord genuine GM parts. They got to be at least three or four times the prices of the ECM's in the catalogs. The fellow that suggested taking the battery cable off. This is when the described conditon starts when the ECM looses power. I do appreciate all the info guys. If anyone has anymore advise it will be welcomed.
