Default questions about different block

One of my friends said he could sell me his 350 block for a really good price. It's from an 80 something truck, and I was wondering if it would work with all the sensors and etc. on my 86. I know you could make almost any chevy engine work in these cars, but I don't want to modify too much.

In short, yes it will work. I am running a 1979 truck block in the 85.

You will need a driver's side dipstick and the oilpan that came with the early block, but everything else will bolt up. I used to run a 70's block in my 84.

Cool. I was thinking that because of the amount of sensors on vettes, other blocks would require me to change some things. I hope he doesn't change his mind!

The only sensor in the block itself is the knock sensor. All the rest are in the heads and the intake manifold. OK purists, the O2 sensor is in exhaust but it is unchanged with a block swap.

You need to know if the block is a one or two piece rear seal.

I am having a serious brain fart right now but I can not remember the year changes for the 1 or 2pc rear main seals. But if is not the same as yours you will need to make some changes if I recall correctly.

Lol, already getting ideas for it... I know it's a good engine, I've heard it before and he's taken very good care of it. I wish I knew the mileage on it though...

Oil pressure and oil temperature sensors are in the block. They are close to the same locations in the early and late blocks.

It will work in your car. the only problem will be how much money you can throw at it.
If you currently don't have a 1 piece rear seal, use your old pan. If you do, just get another one locally at a junk yard off of a 75- 80 corvette.
oil pump pickup is different but oil pump is the same.
A used short block is usually in the $75-$100 range. a short block that is useable with no work is about $150-$200
I bought one for the pickup for $75 and it was a 4 bolt main. I bought one at a wrecking yard for a friend with forged pistons that was useable for $150, 4 bolt main, with a cam, pan, harmonic balancer, oil pump, timing cover and had roller timing chain. It is still running fine 2 years later. We bolted stock vortec heads on it with better springs and a vortec air gap , changed the cam, and it's a killer engine.
