If you are replacing a transmission but keep the old TC how much fluid do you need before startup? I found instructions in a Haynes manual (since I also have the FSM I use the Haynes for the pictures) that says 23 pints. Haven't been able to find anything for how much is in the TC.
And if anyone wants, I am putting all the nuts and bolts I pull into baggies and putting the size on them, I will post where the nuts/bolts go and the wrench/socket size needed to turn them when I get finished.
The new filter came with the rubber gasket. I am going to drain the trans that is going in and change the filter. I know the fluid in the original tranny is still a nice shade of red.

I changed the fluid in the TC in my `87 by draining the trans, changing the filter, & then got all the fluid out of the tc by using the return line at the radiator. I just kept adding a gallon of fluid to the trans for every gallon that came out of the return line, until the fluid coming out of the line was bright red. Its easy, all you have to do is hook a rubber hose to the return line, start the car & let it idle- & let the dirty fluid fill (in my case) a gallon container. Shut the car down, empty the container, put a fresh gallon into the trans, & repeat the process until the fluid coming out is clean.
