Default Stupid question time, dashboard removal

I pulled all the screws out of the dash as I want to get the numbers off my prom, but the dang cover still won't come off to expose the computer. Crowbar time?

If your talking about the dash pad----theres five screws in the front and two in the defroster vent. when they are all out --grab the pad where the defroster vent is and pull straight back towards you----it will unsnap and come right out. dont try pulling up or you might break it. I just pulled mine last week---- simple.

Actually I am removing the front headache box (think I heard that term somewhere, where the glove box if suppose to go) that covers the computer. I want to get the number off my prom.

But what you wrote is good to know, I have to change my dashpad one of these days myself.

There are two screws "hidden" in the bottom of the box that you have to be a snake to reach. If you get the top ones out, you can see the two hidden ones along the bottom of the box. I was going to dye my "bread box" black and when I couldn't reach the darned screws, I masked off the interior and sprayed the "bread box" in place. Check the previous messages and you'll find a link to a site that has instructions on removal in that area, but I don't think it explains how to get those two screws out.

The computer IS NOT behind the crash pad. It is up under the black tray at the bottom of the dash where the passengers feet go. Remove it by removing the three 7 mm screws, unplug the light, and remove black piece. Look straight up in the front of the opening. You will see a bunch of wires up there. There are two connectors going into a silver box but from the bottom I think you will only see the cream colored bracket holding the ECM up. Unpleg the connecters by releasing the silver clips and pull them out. Then unscrew the two 13 or 10 mm bolts (can't remeber) The unit can now be removed by carefull sliding and fancy work. Sometimes it comes out easy sometimes it gets a little stuck and you have to work it out. The box behind the bread box or cradh pad is the MAF burn off relay I think but am sure its not the computer (ECM. You can't even access it through that spot. Need more info, IM me or post for more help.

The prom, is in the computer. It is covered by an alluminum plate that has two 7 or 6.5 mm screws.

Thanks all, this is what I need. The dang corvette book I have makes it look as though the ECM is removed through the bread box.

thanks again

Actually you may not need to unplug the two cables.

Once you have the hush pannel removed from under the dash, just remove the two screws from the bottom of the ECM holder and drop the ECM down onto the carpet. Then remove the two screws and remove the access plate to expose the EPROM. Your '85 setup may differ a little from mine since I have a CalPac.

Once it's open be careful not to move around on the carpet as static electricity can cause damage.
