When I accelerate, even lighly, I hear a creaking from the rear (at least I think the rear), then when I let off the gas I can hear a noise back there also. Makes since that it could be the U-Joints since it creaks when there is torque on the drive shaft...at least I hope that's all it is. I called a local trusted garage and he gave me a rough estimate of $200 if it's the U-Joints. Does this sound like symptoms of U-Joints? I hear it's not too bad to do yourself but I just don't have the time. Thanks for the input.
A good way to test them. Get both tires up on jackstands and put he car in neutral. Move the wheel around, does the halfshaft move all the time? Is there any slack? Like does the wheel move 1/4" in a circle before the halfshaft catches? If so, the u-joints are gone. Thats one way of testing em'.
Well I took it to a family trusted mechanic, he said he didn't think it was the U-Joints and recommended I take it to the dealer since they see Vettes more often than him. The dealer found that it was some rear bracket mounts that were lose. They tightened them up and it runs better than ever. No new parts and it cost $268!!!! Oh well. At least I didn't do the U-Joints myself and find out that wasn't even the problem.
Congrats on a non-problem! I had a similar experience with a scary clanking in the front end whenever I put much torque on the steering wheel. I was ready for a $600 rack and pinion assembly job, but the trusted family mechanic found that the R&P assembly was just loose.
