’89 - When I have the headlamps on, both turn signal indicators on the dash illuminate constantly. But if I use the signals, they blink. I have checked all outside lights, signals, brakes, fog, hi beams, hazards with both the headlamps on and off, everything seems to work properly on the outside.
If the headlamps are off so are the dash signal lamps unless I use the signals and then they blink properly, all is normal.
I would have guessed flasher unit but everthing blinks normally. Any ideas?
I suspect you have a bad ground circuit in the instrument panel. When you turn on the headlights, it pulls current away from the IP. That turns on the the indicators on the dash.
Thanks for the heads up, that gives me somewhere to start. I will pull the cluster next week to see if I can find anything. I had some intermittent light problems in the A/C heater control head that cleared up when I cleaned the contacts, maybe this problem is similar.
Check to see if all your exterior lights are working properly. I have one front driving light that conks out once in a while. I can tell when it's acting up because the turn signal indicator on that side will illuminate.
Or, it might be the grounding pin on the inside of your gauges. They can get carboned up and the 'lectricity tries to find another way back out.

That was my first thought too, I went around the outside with a helper to check all outside lights both with the headlamps on and off, all outside lights worked as they should. I will pull the cluster and clean contacts next.
BTW, I have found using spray cans of contact cleaner to flush out various electronic items fixes a lot of problems, usually switches and contacts. It has recently worked to clear up problems with an Lincoln Welder, a cell phone, a digital camera, a micro wave oven and most importantly, the AC/Heater module in the vett. Drys quick and leaves no residue without damaging the item.
