tips on 700r4 Govonor cap
Anyone have any tips on how to reinstall the cap with the trans still in the car. I though dropping the exhaust would give me the room to tap all around the edges but no luck, I am trying to avoid having to drop the rear of the trans to get it installed. 1993 lt1 if it makes any difference.
Through changing governor springs/weights to alter shift points I've R&R'ed the cap tons of times. What I do is to start the top of the cap and use a large flat piece of metal to spread the load while pushing the cap in. Then tap around it. The case is notched for a spring retainer, those are nice to have installed. I have never dropped the exhaust or trans. I only disconnect the sensor nearby.
I used the end of an old bar type torque wrench to pound mine back on. An 11/16 socket at the end of the wrench enabled me to hit the outside ridge area of the cap and the long bar provided inertia and worked well. In dialing in my governor, I removed and replaced the cap dozens and dozens of time with the trans in the car.
