After having a new distributor installed in my 91, mechanic set the timing to 6 deg atdc, instead of before.. (although he claims it was correct)
noticed the car was really sluggish and went to another shop and discovered their mistake.
what are the consequences of having run the car for a while with retarded timing, is there any risk of burning anything?
cheers
A posibilty of overheating the pre-catalytic converters and the main underbody catalytic converters. But the car would have to be driven for a long time with retarded timing.
If the base ignition timing is set to 6 degrees before top dead center(6BTDC), and your Corvette drives fine now, I would not worry very much.
thanks guys, was just worried about burnt valves or something like that because of the delayed combustion. the reason i was worried was that the idle has started to become a bit rough right before changing to the correct timing. perhaps a change of spark plugs...

It may be good to pull one to see if it is fouled.
Thats good timing below 6* won't cause damage. I noticed sometimes getting knock counts on acceleration. I found the EGR was bad and replaced it, and will have to see if that fixes it when I do my scans. If not, I was thinking of dropping the timing to 4* advanced to see what that did.
