I don't know if the '88 has the light up top like my '86 does. If it is up top you have to open the hatch and there are two big screws that bolt the light to the hatch. Take them off and you can get to the bulbs. I can't remember exactly how buy you will figure it out. Or else somebody else will add the correct info. And if it is in the bumper I know less about them. Good Luck.
Take off your license plate and reach up with ( i think) a 7mm wrench. There are two bolts holding it in. If you're just wanting to replace the bulb .. no wrench required on it (just the license plate).
Yes it's at the top also, but when I lift up the hatch there are three circles that seem to be holding the glass to the hatch. I dont see anything holding the light to the car.

Re: 3rd brake light removal (szukrider)
I changed the bulbs in my ’88 3rd eye, It’s simple, after opening the hatch look up by where the light is. You will see 2 or 3 (it's late and my mind is fuzzy) allen head screws there. Unscrew them and remove that plate. detach the light from the car (the top lid comes off). You can now replace the bulb and put back together. Takes about 5 mins.
The '88 coupe has two Torx screws under the fixture that hold go through the glass and hold the light fixture. I had to put the Torx bit into a socket due to the limited access space under there.
Once you remove them lay the assembly over on the bow and remove some more screws to expose the bulbs. Put on some rubber gloves before touching or installing the new bulbs.
