Well I just replaced the tensioner, cuz it was jumping up and down. The car runs great now. Except... the fog lights and dash lights (except the speedometer cluster) went out all at once, and won't come back on. I was going up a bumpy driveway at the time, so I think something got knocked loose or shook up. Any ideas where I should check? The headlights, speedometer, and other interior lights all come on.
I would check fuses first. Beyond that you need someone familiar with '87 wiring or else a diagram to determine what those items have in common, possibly a ground.
Fuses seem fine.. though I'm not sure which one they would be on. From looking in the manual: the fog lights switch and turn signals are on the same fuse. That fuse is fine. Besides, my turn signals work fine.
Fog lights will not work / no response to fog light swtich Dash lights (except speedometer cluster) will not turn on Speedometer cluster flickers constantly Headlights dim when brakes are pressed (this may be normal) Sometimes will not start - wont even try - no reaction to key - leave it alone for a few minutes, then it will start Today it made a split-second starting noise, then died - all lights went out and would not come back on until I disconnected and reconnected battery. Something makes a slight mettallic noise while running - wasn't there yesterday Belt will be noisy every time until belt dressing is sprayed on One side of belt was ripping in spots due to a bad tensioner that was replaced yesterday A/C Compresser had a bolt that would not go in - removed now Also starting today, does not idle smoothly, drops to 4/5 then blasts up to 11 - repeat
Other things to note:
The headlights, turn signals, break lights, reverse lights all work.
All other interior lights work.
The headlights **** is missing.
Something about the wiring connections is wrong, surely.

You may have resolved your belt issue with the new tensioner. But, you may have another alignment problem. Belt dressing just allows the belt to slip, masking the real problem.
As for the rest, you could try to pull codes from the CCM (not ECM). It
wouldn't hurt to check grounds, with the help of a diagram.
Did your electrical problems show up after the tensioner replacement, or were they there before?
It's had the starting problem since I got it a few weeks ago. I honestly don't remember if the fog and dash lights was before or after I changed the tensioner.. probably right before. I took it to Autozone and they said that they couldn't hook it up to pull codes. Is this really true, and if so, where do I go?
I believe those codes are ECM codes, I can't help you with specific diagnosis instructions for them because my car and FSM are '92 and the systems are different. You might be able to get further info from "search" or maybe another forum member will post up info for you. Not sure, but your car may also have a CCM (central control module) which manages many other functions beyond the ECM. Codes are pulled from the CCM in a similar way, that might be in search also. Don't make the common mistake of throwing parts at a problem, you will eventually be sorry for using this approach.
A huge help for you would be the '87 FSM, or Factory Service Manual, used by the dealers. You could try ebay, this forum in buy/sell, forum vendors, or the original publisher, Helm, Inc. Maybe Santa will bring it for you.
I suspect poor grounding in at least some of your other electrical issues, a diagram will be a great help and is in the FSM.
