I have a 1994 Corvette I use only for 1/4 mile Drag Racing. It still has a fully functions ABS System which I manually turn off prior to each run.
Of course there is the occassional time or two I forget to hit the manual off switch in which case I find myself being reminded qucikly of my forgetfulness when I try to do my burn out after exiting the water-box! I would like to remove the entire ABS System from the Corvette and I was wondering if the removal will have any impact on any of the other systems in my Corvette. I run the OEM computer system with a modified custom tune program as well as most of the other stock set-ups as required under the IHRA Stock rules. I would think I can remove the entire ABS System with no negative results but wanted to check first before proceeding.
You have ABS and ASR confused. You can not turn off the ABS (anti-lock brakes). The ASR (traction control) is what's keeping you from doing your burn out.
You can remove the ASR motor from under the hood. It's right next to the master cylinder and has a black plastic cover that says ASR. You will need to replace your throttle cable to do so. Get a throttle cable for a 94 Camaro with LT1 and without ASR. ASR was an option in the Camaro, so make sure you order the cable for a Camaro without that ASR option. I did this in my '94 track car. I did not remove the ABS.
You are correct, ARS is what I meant and not ABS - a mind is a terrible thing to waste and some days mine has just lost all function! Thanks for the info on the cable.

Removed the ASR on my 94 and put in the Camaro cable. No problems.

For grins, while the subject is being discussed....
If/when the ABS system shoots craps, can you save a lot of money by getting rid of the ABS motor? I assume you'd bypass or replace the lines leading in/out of the motor behind the driver's seat.
Can't say I've seen many complaints about ABS going out either. They must be pretty reliable on L98 and LT1 cars?

I have never seen one fail.
I can tell you that I drove my '94 with the ABS disabled. I just unplugged it. I no longer had ABS, but the brakes worked great. I never removed the large ABS pump from behind the driver seat. It's still sitting there right now. I never rerouted the lines either. Only real reason to do it would be if it got clogged up with something or if you just wanted to remove the weight. Then you have two choices:
1) Remove the ABS pump and install blocks (like an old proportioning valve) to connect all the lines to those.
2) Run new brake lines from the master cylinder to the calipers.
Interesting thought as I may be running new brake lines in my 85 Corvette. I see Mid America is selling prefabbed lines for 86 and up, however. I'm assuming if I wanted a set for my 85 without the ABS, some rerouting would be possible. Unless a company is making brake lines for 84-85 Corvettes without ABS. That would be pretty nice!

Swapping out the cable is fine, but ASR will also retard ignition timing and if it detects a yaw motion, it will apply braking force. Wouldn't that have to be programmed out of the ECM?

Had the timing and braking issue at the track when my ASR was bad. Removing it and going with the Camaro cable eliminated the problem. No issue with ECM after removal and did not reprogram. Also, the factory cable issue with the new AS&M 58 Throttle Body went away.
