Default How difficult?.. Replacing fuel press.regulator

I posted about stalling prob with my 84........I think I found the culprit to be the fuel pressure regulator because it seems to be running rich , I get black smoke and fuel odor but no ses code?? Do you guys have some advice on replacing it I bought new regulators and rebuild kits for my TBI's. I just wanted to ask if it's a pretty involved process....Thanks....JJ

Sorry I only do TPI, but a GM Shop Manual would be your friend and worth the $$. With flat rates of $65/hr and up it doesn't take long to pay back on a $90 book set.

Before you condemn the regulator, check your fuel presssure. The spec is 9-12 or 13 psi. it would have to be 15 or more to cause black smoke. I wouldn't expect a regulator to increase in pressure during failure. If anything, the diaphram would burst or leak, and the result would be low fuel pressure. Possibly you have a leaking gasket somewhere in the TBs that will get replaced by installing the OH kit.

The pressure regulator is integral with the rear throttle body assy. The overhaul kit will service it. I am concerned by your statement that you bought, "new regulators", as explained above, there is no separate regulator, like in a TPI car. The front TB has an accumulator that is similar in appearence to the regulator. The parts to repair each of these is a part of the TB rebuild kit you bought. I hope you didn't get "taken" buying (a) regulator(s) that you don't need.

Rebuilding the TBs on a crossfire engine is like a carb rebuild, only easier. The kit should have directions. If not see a service manual. Good luck.

Like 65Z01 said, I could help you out with a TPI but not a Crossfire. :nonod:

...Hmmm...

If it was a TPI (say an '86!), would the fuel rails or the top plenum have to be removed to get it in???

(Sorry for the off-year, 84hyprvette, but at least it gets it back to the top!) :yesnod:
