On some years the original key from gm had issues with failing after a period of time . The GM notice I read was that it was due in part to them being to 'short'. not sure why , but when I changed mine it came with a longer key and the locksmith that made the resistor key from the 'longer' blank key made sure the lengths matched. hope this helps
The lock cylinder knows nothing about your key other than the ridges to turn the tumblers. You need to get a key cut to match the locking part with the same resistor you have now to keep vats happy.

only passing on what I read in a GM tech sheet, suspect it had something to do with the older key wallowing around in the lock. Current 'longer' key does have less movement, and my old 'shorter' key, did 'wallow' a bit. Tech sheet mentioned that the 'shorter' key, with wear or looseness between it and the lock cylinder, would either give false or non readings due to the movement, and that customers were having to 'hold' the key in a certain way to get the car to start. It also stated that the 'longer' key resolved the issue

The first thing I did when I got my 91 was have an extra 3'd set of keys that never get used so I had a master to cut new ones. Cool tip on the longer key how do you tell if youhave a long or short one?
Dave
I was having vats issues and did a search and the tech sheet came up, when I changed lock cylinders the new one came with the longer key. It is visably longer, aprox 1/4" maby a little less and doesnt 'wallow' . I cant find the tech sheet or I would include it. Its also a different part number than the original and when I bought it from NAPA the paperwork said that it replaced the older part number.
