Again another desrciption:
I have a cold start idling problem. the car idles very rough when cold. engine almost stalls. i have to keep it up to 1000 rpm for about 5 minutes otherwise the engine would die. when the engine warmed up a little bit sometimes the idling comes up to normal. sometimes, after this warm up procedure, i stop the engine an restart. everthing is fine (normal idling) then.
The problem must be something that regulates the idling until the engine is warm.
I CHECKED THE CODES TODAY by jump. the a/b connector ... NO CODES stored.
Should I read something special in the climate control display (HVAC)?
NEXT IDEA: COULD IT BE A BAD THERMOSTAT, I think the problem is coolant temp. realted. Or is there a coolant temp. sensor thats bad...where is it located.
The next thing I´ll check is the coolant temp. sensor. But how can I check the sensor ?
I had the car at the repair shop before the problem started. Maybe the car lift crimped a fuel hose. I watched the lifted car an saw that the four "arms" of the lift are toughing some lines. I will check what lines could be crimped.
hi frank my 92 did the same thing. there is a sensor on the front of the water pump. the clip that held the wire on broke when i changed the opti and pump. started doing the very thing you explained. i changed the pigtail thinking it was not making good contact. same problem. i bought a set of 92 corvette service manuals from gm [great books] they said check the voltage at the sensor. sure enough it was high. changed the sensor and the problem was cured. these manuals are year and car spacific. they came from books4cars.com the guys name is gregory park. freight and all was 80.95. these manuals cover everything on the car. great books. if you want a address or phone # let me know. hope this helps robert
Re: cold start problem /bad idling no.2 (robert kirk)
hi robert thanks so far, i have the manual but only on microfche, but i dont´t have a reader yet.
do you know the correct voltage at the sensor ?
frank
I checked the pigtails celaned them. They were not too much corroded.
Another guess: Can the coollant temp. sensor be bad, when i get "normal" coolant temp. readings ?.
I tryed that today, fans come up at correct coolant temp. ?
Or is this coolant temp,. sensor on the waterpump housing just for the ecm and not for the water temp. gauge ?
Frank
frank, i wish i could answer your questions but i can't. i have not had this car very long and this is all new to me. as i find out whats going on i will post and let you know. i am talking with a line mech at the local chevy dealer and he is trying to walk me through this. i gave him your questions and about a dozen of my own and he is trying to track down the answers. he's a great guy and is getting free lunches while he explains this to me. or better yet while he patiently explains this to my old brain. i will keep you posted on what i find out. robert

Re: cold start problem /bad idling no.2 (86VetteBill)
hi bill,
i think the 86 iac is not the same like the 92 iac. i had to retract the spindele to 28 mm. it was hard work.
cleaned the whole thing just with an old tooth brush and a dry rag.
works really fine now. smooth idling.
frank
followed the procedure desrcibed in the haynes manual.
