Just pick up a 86 vette, for me and the sons to play with
have a few of question

Whats the best repair book to buy ?

I have a OBD 2 code reader, will that work ? Does the cods show up on the dash boards or am I stuck with the flashing lights ?

Going to do the once over ( new vacuum hoses, cooling hoses,Intake man gasket,

Is there any other parts that should be clean,or uncloog?

the car has 87,000 miles on it,looks and I paid $3,000 for it

what are the biggest problem with that year I should address

....... The factory service manual is the best choice ... you can find them here in the parts for sale forum , or new through Helm Inc . ... don't bother with Haynes or Chilton ...
86 is OBDI ... flashing lights are all you get ... thats where the factory service manual earns its keep ...
Tune-up ... plugs , wires , Oxygen sensor , cap & rotor ... adjust Throttle Position sensor ... anything above and beyond that should be done as needed ...
I have an '87 and I can't say that there are any typical gremlins to look for ... mostly PM issues with a 20 something year old vehicle ...
Good Luck with your project .... ................

At 87000 miles it should not need much. First 100,000 my 87 just got the basic maintenance stuff. After that it got mods.

If you are just getting into FI on Corvettes I suggest buying "Corvette Fuel Injection & Electronic Engine Control: 1982 through 2001" by Charles Probst. The single best book on how the systems work and how to work on them. You can get it at several dealers and on line book stores.

The after market service manuals are not much help. Factory manual is almost mandatory.

You can find ODBI scanners. Auto Xray has one that will pull the codes and read the sensors in real time.
