This may sound stupid but is there any feedback to the engine computers from the LCD dash? I ask cause I have the digital panel out to do some repairs and decided to run to the store in the car and it died 3 times before I got outa the driveway. After the third time it struggled to crank back up so I pulled it back in the drive. Its been cold but I warmed it to operating temps before trying to take off. Its never given me a hard time cold before.
May just be coincidence but figured I would ask. Any other problems running the car without the dash in place?
Only thing I am aware off is the VSS signal runs from the cluster to the ECM on early cars.
(On later cars ,cluster gets VSS signal from ECM )
If VSS signal not present; can be a problem when decelerating and coming to a stop because ECM
does not know road speed is dropping and the revs may hang up

Exactly and usually sets a code 24, but shouldn't cause the ECM to enter limp home mode.
Gotta put the year of the car in the post. It makes a difference sometimes. Or put it in your avatar or sig so it's automatic. Anyway, on my 85 when I took the lcd dash out I mistakenly thought the car was running normal, but on mine the vss signal goes to the lcd cluster then the ecm. Having the cluster out disabled the ecm controlled torque converter lockup, which meant that I wasn't getting full flow to the trans cooler, which is probably the reason my fluid is a little burnt. So, depending on the year it can make a big difference. I don't know why yours is stalling as that wasn't a problem I ran into.

Good point, Rich. I looked at his profile and saw that Steve has an '85 with 4+3.
