Oil Specification

Oil Specification
What is the actual oil specification for the 1985 Corvette? Reason I'm asking, is a friend of mine said that due to different atmospheres, when one gets imported to england, the oil needs to be different or an additive used. I can't see this being true at all. I could understand a different oil weight if any engine was being used in seriously low temperatures, but that's all.

I'm sure the climate in England is similar to many parts of the U.S. but I've never heard of different oil for different climates aside from colder/hotter weights.

But there is a reason for a lighter oil in serisouly colder climates, as oil thickens when it's colder, say if you were in -20c all the time, you'd need a thinner oil.

A good grade of 5W-30 will be fine for most areas of England if not Europe. Oil brands found throughout Europe like Castrol, Valvoline, BP, Mobil, Shell, or Esso should work fine in the appropriate viscosities. Most all conventional oils today meet API Spec SM standards and that is far beyond the API Spec SF/CC from the mid-80's.
But if the engine has some really high miles, then a 10W-30 grade would be appropriate. Both viscosities are very common weights of oil in most parts of the world.
Same for the rest of the driveline; follow the factory specs for the trans and diff. Dexron III for auto trans fluid, a good 80W-90 GL5 gear oil in the diff with a bottle or two of the GM positraction additive. If the car is a 4+3 manual, use 80W-90 in the 4-speed part and Dexron III in the OD unit.
In any event, a good quality oil filter should be installed at every oil change.
