Default High oil pressure?

Hey guys, just wondering if you could shed a little light on a problem Im having. I just recently bought a stock 1996 vette, with 110k on the clock. When Im idling the oil pressure seems to be normal, with the needle sitting right in the middle of the guage. When I give it any throttle at all, the oil pressure jumps to high end of the guage between max pressure, and the 3/4 mark. I cant figure this out. There are no drivability issues, no idle issues, and no symptoms that I can see or hear. Not too sure what to make of this. I dont want to have any permanent damage, or risk catastrophic failure. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!

On the 94 dash, there is a button that when pushed will give you a digital reading of the dash functions...including oil pressure. I don't know if the 96 has the same feature. If it does, then push it until you get the oil pressure reading to give you the actual PSI reading... not a low, middle and high. A high reading of 60-80 PSI would be okay when off idle and running down the road at the higher RPM's.

I havent scrolled through the digital readout to get an exact number, but wouldnt it be safe to say the gauge in the dash and the digital readout are both reading the same pressure sensor? I cant see Chevrolet installing seperate pressure sensors for the digital and analog readouts, and I cant rationalize thinking the reading is safe if its on the almost pegged on the guage on some days. I think something just isnt right, but I dont know the LT1 at all, so I cant speculate. Im gonna change the oil this week, and make sure the guy who had it before me put the right filter on. Seems like a safe place to start.
